Who really developed and manufactures the most comfortable ergonomic pen?

If you were to believe statements from Colin Roche and the media hype you might answer "PenAgain". But you would be wrong. Let’s examine some of the PenAgain claims.

PenAgain claim 1. PenAgain is an original idea

Actually the original idea of a pen that did not require "squeezing" to hold but would incorporate "downward pressure" was first patented 145 years ago by Jacob Hill from South Wales. In his patent description he states:

"…this invention has for its object improvements in pen and pencil holders. In construction penholders, in place of the stick ordinarily employed, I apply a loop of wire, or other suitable material, and this loop when using the pen is placed over the forefinger, or other finger, as may be preferred. In place of a loop, a hook, ring, or crutch passing over the finger may be employed. I also prefer to make the holder of a triangular form, in place of cylindrical, as is usual, but the loop, hook, ring or crutch may be applied to an ordinary penholder. Pencil holders I also form in a similar manner.

The following are some of the advantages, to be derived from the use of the pen and pencil holders constructed in this manner. They are especially convenient in office work, as from the easy position in which the pen or pencil lies under the forefinger, when applied in writing, and the total absence of pressure to keep the holder in it’s proper position. They prevent anything like cramp, or pain arising, such as frequently felt with the ordinary penholder after continued and speedy writings. "

Patent No. 384, (1865) [click here to see all text]

The "Ring-Pen", designed and manufactured by GRANDEE, Corporation, was the first to recognize the advantages of this design and manufacture and mass merchandise the first ergonomic pen worldwide. In the process of developing the "Ring-Pen", ideas from modern engineering and aerodynamics were incorporated into the design. Some of these features do overlap with Hill's patent, however Grandee only claims to offer the first balanced mass-marketed pen world-wide which takes some of the ideas of this original patent and adds 20th century engineering. Others have actually claimed that the concept of using downward pressure instead of squeezing is their own unique concept, even though there are patents dating back to 1865, and there is an internationally marketed and patented product (the "Ring-Pen") which is well known and publicized since the mid-1990s.

The PenAgain crutch design (or lower half of the Ring-Pen) is actually an early GRANDEE Corp. design (over 20 years ago) in the development of the Ring-Pen, but was quickly abandoned for a more ergonomic and functional approach.

So, the PenAgain is hardly an original idea and one could argue it is nothing more than a version similar to one stage in the early development of the Ring-Pen – a stage that GRANDEE developers quickly determined was NOT the best design.

PenAgain claim 2. PenAgain is the most comfortable pen in the world

If PenAgain is the most comfortable pen in the world, where are the studies to support the claim? Talk is cheap! Where is the proof?

The "Ring-Pen" design is very unique and comes from a scientific approach in the development process. Designed to be precisely balanced, the pen is a result of the theory of stability and aerodynamics. The result is an extremely comfortable ergonomic pen that is fluid in writing without pain and fatigue. Most pen users should find the sculpted 3-dimensional design of the "ring" on the "Ring-Pen" to be much more comfortable than the more rudimentary and less-supportive 2-dimensional "v-crutch" shape on the PenAgain (or earliest GRANDEE's models). Simply try them out and see for yourself!

At Grandee Corp. we do not make claims about our products we cannot support. We have been selling the "Ring-Pen" for over 11 years and have letters from people all over the world telling us how good our ergonomic pen and how it has relieved them of their pain and fatigue. We could also say the "Ring-Pen" is the most comfortable pen in the world based on those letters, but we suggest customers try it out for themselves. And it is our firm belief that if someone compares the *Ring-Pen *to the PenAgain, they will choose the "Ring-Pen" for its design, comfort and ease of use.

So now you know some of the facts about ergonomic pen design and comfort claims.

So make the right choice and purchase the original – the remarkable "Ring-Pen"
